Boetzelaer Castle is located in Appeldorn on an old branch of the Lower Rhine close to Kalkar. Its builders, the Lords of Boetzelaer, were one of the most powerful knightly families in the region in the 13th and 14th centuries.
The castle had largely fallen into ruin by the 20th century. Reconstruction and restoration took place between 1997 and 2003. Completely lost substance was supplemented with modern architectural elements. In 2004 the castle was opened to the public.
The stairs lead us to the light-filled first floor and the dance hall. The oak floorboards are perfect for dancing.
The town of Kalkar - founded on October 20, 1230 on a sandbank deposited by the Rhine - is only 4 km away. It was not a settlement that has grown over many centuries, but rather a planned town from the outset.
It's a beautiful town with many very old medieval houses and a lovely market square, surrounded by small restaurants, two bakeries, and a well-known gelateria with excellent ice cream. The linden tree in the center is several hundred years old.
